Sergeant First Class William Zapfe died on June 19, 2007 when a roadside bomb hit his vehicle in Iraq. The Covington native was on his third tour of duty.

The 35 year old Zapfe was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division based at Fort Stewart, the Department of Defense said in a statement.

Zapfe joined the Army in 1991, serving the last 12 years at Fort Stewart, working as a combat engineer. He met his wife while stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., where he did tank training. The couple has two sons and a daughter.

Although Zapfe and his family were living near Fort Knox, the funeral was held in Dry Ridge and he was laid to rest in Hill Crest Cemetery.
