21 year old Private First Class Zachary Salmon died in Afghanistan on January 19, 2011. Pfc. Salmon was a gunner in an armored vehicle which was attacked.
Pfc. Salmon grew up in Ohio, but he moved to Tennessee as a teenager and graduated from Pigeon Forge High School in 2008. Salmon joined the Army in March 2010 and he was deployed in September. His sister says he considered his service his calling in life. Part of Pfc. Salmon's family has lived in Pigeon Forge for the past eight years, but most of them still live in our area. His mother lives in Hebron.
Pfc. Salmon was with the Cavalry Unit of the 101st Airborne based at Fort Campbell. He is survived by a three-year-old son named Noah who lives in Pigeon Forge.
Pfc. Salmon was buried in Aurora, Indiana.
