The University of Cincinnati ushered in a new era this morning. Gregory Williams officially took over the reigns as President of the university, with some pomp and circumstance. Local 12's Lauren Bercarich has more on Williams first day at work, plus what he says about his move to Cincinnati.
After meeting with the school senate and faculty members, Williams is set to hop on a plane to represent U.C. at the Big East President's Conference.
But his day did start with some celebration. The band welcomed U.C.'s 27th president, along with cheerleaders and a crowd of faculty and students. In his brief comments -- Williams said he was delighted to be at U.C. and to build on the great momentum at the university. He noted that having a winning football team only added to the excitement.
Williams left his post as President at the City College of New York to join the Bearcats. Before that he served as Dean of the Law School at Ohio State. He's also authored three books, including his memoir.
Williams says his welcome to the Queen City has been overwhelming. "It could not have gotten any better, but it didn't surprise me because of the warmth I've seen thus far in Cincinnati -- about Sarah and I being here."
Williams told the crowd today that he dreamed of winning a basketball scholarship to U.C. when he was in high school. Well, he didn't get that scholarship, but in the end, he says he faired a even better.
Williams succeeds Nancy Zimpher - who left in June to become Chancellor of the State University of New York. In that role, Zimpher is in charge of all 64 campuses in the university system.
