When it's super cold out, one thing we want to do as homeowners is keep the cold outside, the warm air on the inside. I'd like to show you an area where your home is vulnerable. This is the seal plate up here. The floor joist that set on the foundation. Now here's where the draft is and, here's how I can tell there's a draft. If you'll look up there, can you see all the spider webs? Spiders build their webs in areas where there's a draft so they can catch their prey. So I know there's a draft up there. Now if you don't have insulation packed into this opening, I would highly recommend you do that. In this case I want to pull this insulation out and where the two by four is sitting on top of the foundation, I guarantee you that little seal that was placed in when the home was built, there's a gap there. Now, that's what's creating the draft. So, a good way to eliminate that is with some spray foam. So, step one, whether you have insulation here or not, check for any spider webs. If there are spider webs, pull the insulation out, caulk or foam the seal plate. And then put in the insulation. If you have some insulation that has the paper vapor barrier, remember that goes in towards the home. And of course, if we eliminate this draft, we'll save a few bucks on the energy bill.
