Family and friends are mourning the loss of Fairfield High School graduate Nicholas Olivas.

The Defense Department hasn't said how the 20-year-old died.

Local 12 News Reporter Larry Davis spoke to people who knew Olivas.

I hate it for the family I hate it for his wife and child, knowing his daddy.

Susan Wagers and her husband lowered their American flag to half staff, soon after learning their neighbor, infantryman Nicholas Olivas was killed in Afghanistan.

In the front yard of the Fairfield home where he grew up, Olivas' proud mother had a sign proclaiming her son was army strong. Now, on the front door was a service banner bearing a gold star the designation for a family member who died serving his country. Susan Wagers had memories of Nicholas from over the years.

"He was a very very good child, you would see him catch the bus, driving a car and everything."

There was a somber mood today at Fairfield High School where Olivas graduated in 2010. Principal Billy Smith says the tragedy affects the entire community.

"In this case he's just a young man, married and, our heart breaks for his family"

Nicholas Olivas is the second Fairfield High School grad to die in the war on terror. Lance Corporal Taylor Prazynski died in Iraq in 2005. A memorial to the marine sits outside the school.

Back in the neighborhood where Olivas grew up, Susan Wagers remembered a young man who helped his mother and sisters and was a good neighbor.

"We got egged one time and he came over and helped me clean it up."

Wagers lost a brother in Vietnam and says she can sympathize with the Olivas family.

"It's very hard, he was a brave man."

Funeral arrangements are pending.

How sad that yet another young life is taken during a "war" that we shouldn't have been in to begin with! Bless all our service men/women, their families & friends! WAR ISN'T THE ANSWER! Our government needs to be overhauled!

Screw politics! This young man died in a war zone and leaves behind a family gieving over his loss. Afghanistan is a tribal sand pit and once again, as in Vietnam, America thought they could rush in and do what others were unable to do. How arrogant we can be - sometimes letting these places implode would save American lives and if the citizens of these demonic hellholes want change and rights, let THEM fight for it. I am sick of it!

There aren't enough prayers to help this. We got who we went after for 911! There will never be rest in the Middle East. Why is it American's must sacrifice more of our young for this endeavor? I'm sick of hearing we had the gulf war to prevent higher gas prices...it went up anyways!...still going up because of what this week? Iraq? Sadam? We provided this sorry a$$ the weapons and fire power...ask Oliver North. So, we are in Afghanistan! Pakistan...where Osama bin whatever was living in moderate comfort. American's have paid this little 3rd world country how much? I'm done! Pull our troups out! Enough! Our troups need to be home protecting home! RIP young man! I have prayers for your family, and I weap for this loss of a wonderful young man with so much promise ahead.

Liberals demanded the wars be ended when Bush was in power, but once they got their guy Obama in power, they clammed up and let him become a warmonger. This shows what weasels and hypocrites they are. Anyone who is stupid enough to vote for Obama again, is nothing but a weasel and a turd.
