Coverage of Sentencing Hearing from Wednesday, June 6, 2012

A former Bengal found guilty of sex crimes is sentenced to spend 12 years in prison.

In April, Nate Webster was convicted of four counts of sexual conduct with a minor.

The judge said Webster preyed on his 15-year-old victim when she was most vulnerable and alone.

Local 12's Tiffany Wilson was in court when Webster apologized to the victim and her family for the first time.

Dressed in prison stripes instead of his typical pinstripe suit, Webster told the court he messed up.

The victim's father says Webster's apology is too little too late.

Before trial, Webster turned down a plea deal for four years. Now, he'll spend three times that in prison. The prosecutor says the victim's family is satisfied, but still feel their daughter was victimized.

"My childhood was stolen from me."

But, the victim acknowledged she was a willing participant in the affair.

"I apologize to everyone I've hurt."

Despite the girl's apology, Judge Ralph Winkler told the court Webster's duty as an adult was to protect and defend the girl while her dad was out of town for work, not turn to her for sexual pleasure.

Judge Winkler also ordered Webster to pay a $40,000 fine and pay $3,400 in restitution to the victim's family.

Jurors have reached a verdict in the trial of a former Cincinnati Bengal. Nate Webster was found guilty on Wednesday on four counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.  But the jury acquitted Webster on other charges, including sexual battery and gross sexual imposition.

However, a judge decided to send Webster to jail immediately, saying he a flight risk because of the charges.  The judge told Webster that he should prepare to serve a prison term at his sentencing, scheduled for June 6th.  Webster could face up to 20 years in prison.

Jurors deliberated about two and a half hours Tuesday before going home for the day.  The jury returned to the Hamilton County Courthouse Wednesday morning at 9:00a.m. to resume deliberations and came to a decision around 1:15 p.m.

Webster had sexual contact with a 15-year-old girl back in 2009. The victim's father worked for the Bengals as an assistant coach but Webster's playing career was over at the time of the crimes.

What a screwed up society we live in. Sexual conduct with a willing minor who has already gone through puberty should not be an offense punishable by prison time. The minor has to be full of **** to have wanted and had sex with a football star then claimed "My childhood was stolen from me." No *sweetheart*, your childhood was over long before then.

I really do get that she was underage but 12 years for a few flings with a willing participant? Rapists do less time. Our legal system needs an overhaul.

Brilliant! Turned down 4 years for 12 years. Man, this dude is just plain dumb. A minor is sick enough, but doing the coach's daughter? They don't come much dumber. He got what he deserved.

Im not saying its not wrong BUT If he was the former Bangal Cheerleader he wouldnt get anything out of it! Men go to Jail for the same thing women dont go to jail for! Double standard isnt right no matter how you look at it, If they are under age and its non consensual sex then they should go to Jail but now days they are having sex very young and soon as these kids decide to send them to jail they can!! Shame on them for having sex with young kids anyway but really if your sending him to jail then the cheerleader needs to go too..

The father should be held responsible in some way. As her father, he DID know how old she was yet still allowed her to party with Webster. What did he think was going to happen? This girl was failed by several people, and also made her own questionable choices.

Schuler was her name i think. she got a slap on the wrist. even so, the Bengal could've prevented this by banging an 18 year old chick. and on top of that, you bang the coach's daughter!that's asking for trouble! 18&up if my thing. actually, 24 & up is better. I can't tolerate teenage girls, even if they are legally are adults, they are sooooooo like duhhhhh, clueless! LOL!!

I agree overboard- I know we are a capitalistic society but somehow we've gotten lost on what is/isn't for sale. Pride, honesty, integrity and loyalty have all fallen by the wayside for nothing more than money... and a prison sentence if you get caught. Then there's the guys with ALL the money who get to buy their way out of trouble, most of the time, all the while making laws to govern those w/o a pot... nor a window to throw it out of. I'll lay hard money that this guy doesn't serve anywhere near the full 12 years.
