The death of a Trenton man, killed when he and his preschool-age son were struck by a train,  has been ruled a suicide, according to a final report from the Butler County Coroner’s Office. Our partners at the Hamilton Journal News looked through the report and say toxicology tests revealed the presence of alcohol and prescription drugs in Robert Stacey Brown’s body.

The 33 year old Trenton resident and his four year old son Robert Coy Brown were killed when they were hit by a CSX train around 5 p.m. on February 22nd, near the intersection of East State Street and Potter Avenue.   The pair were returning home from a day of fishing at the Great Miami River.

Witnesses said Robert Stacey Brown picked up a stroller with his son in it, then walked straight ahead without looking left or right, according to Lacey. Video from inside the train revealed the lights and signals at the crossing were in working order, according to Trenton Police Chief Tim Traud.

Police say the last time a train killed a pedestrian in Trenton was in 2010.

I can tell everyone exactly what took place. I was the engineer on the train and i witnessed it all first hand. Not a day goes by without it replaying in my mind. I was running south to cincy from lima. i was running 43 mph (max speeds 50 mph). the father looked up at the train when we were 150 yds out or so. I started blowing my horn for the road crossing per the rules. the traffic was stopped on both sides of the tracks. the crossing gate were down and the lights were working. the father continued walking towards the tracks. I looked at my conductor and said "he's not going to stop.. oh GOD he isn't stopping. i threw my train breaks on to an emergency application. The was not stopping. the stroller was not stuck on the tracks. He did not hesitate he intentionally step in front of my train killing his son and himself.. Now that said. As the engineer on the train my life has been devastated. I have flash backs and horrible nightmares. I was hospitalized for a week for PTSD. I see a therapist 3 times a week. I'm unable to work because of the traumatization. My family is affected and suffer because of the fathers actions. MY life has been turned upside down. Yet everyone comments on the father and son. Well my conductor and myself and our families are forever scared and changed. We suffer on a daily basis because of Robert Stacy Brown's action.. spend a day with me.. ask me how my life is.. forever changed Ryan Smith CSX Locomotive Engineer

I think legal alien is on the right track. Some men in the midst of separation or divorce will kill their kids to spite the mother, and then kill themselves to spite the justice system. I reckon that boy will be separated from his dad at the pearly gates, and then bask in the love of his true Father in Heaven.

corndog- now that i think about it, your right. just being on drugs and alcohol and alone with your son is bad enough. i retract my last statement, because i do believe this was deliberate. no thought of his son, family, or the witnesses that had to see this. horrible.

@blonde33-"poor innocent.." Really? @2828m-"this guy is a hero" Really? @that guy-"he's a good guy" Really? @theshiz2002-"you people are sickening" Really? @bcatz 8:06AM-what would you rule then? There is no other legal terminology for "man walked around gates and ignored all oncoming train warning signals with while carrying his son with both lives ending but the man was on scrips and beer so we should tread lightly because he knew not what he had done"??? Give me a freaking break. @legal alien-WTF are you trying to say? To all the aforementioned, please come back and repost so we know what your errant thoughts have evolved to. To @derailed 2/24 1:04AM, @ts6743 and several others; AMEN brothers and sisters. I can only pray this boy has the greatest perch in Heaven and this father has the raunchiest, eternally painful spot in Hell. To the boys family, obviously many of us are hoping you can make some good of this-scholarships, charity, something. The the train crew and any other witnesses, may God be with you during this time of recovery. This should never happen to anyone and to me it should certainly never happen IN FRONT of anyone.
