PRAYER AT PUBLIC MEETINGS? I hate to be the one to break this to you but whether you like it or not, I guarantee you there are people praying at every government meeting.

whatsonmymind wrote, "Yes. If you don't like it get up and leave. The ACLU needs to butt out of our freedom of speech and rights. This nation is on a slippery slide for the worst and not for the better." To the first sentence, the intent of the founders was to make America an INCLUSIVE country. The ACLU acts to protect EVERYONES rights, not just one group's. Hopefully religion will stay in the believers' home and church, but not in the public square.

Response to olddingo, both "One Nation Under GOD" and "In GOD We Trust"? were added to the currency and pledge much later. It was made "universal" in 1954 to show that the US was not like the Godless Russians. As stated in the Tripoli treaty, the United States of America is in no way a christian nation. The treaty, with the clause included was passed unanimously. There is also the "wall of separation between church and state.

The christians think they are the "only religion". As there many religions, most of which do not agree with the christian prayer. The only way prayer should be allowed is if there is a list of all religious and or spiritual groups in the jurisdiction of the governmental entity that is having the meeting, and the prayer is given by each religious group in succession. ( christian, muslem, wicken, hindu, shinto, and what ever other religious groups are in the jurisdiction of the governmental entity there may be. This would also include atheist and agnostic, though not relay a religion. Overall, there should not be a religious opening to governmental meetings.

Was not this country founded on "One Nation Under GOD" and "In GOD We Trust"? Unfortunately, to satisfy those who do not believe in God, we have lost our way. Congress and all government meetings NEED to go back to our beginnings. Put GOD back in office and just maybe this country can back on the right path. It is very sad, jsmith, that you have lost your way. The "Power of Prayer" is an awesome thing. My husband just spend 10 days in the hospital and with the "Power of Prayer" from so many people (family, friends, our church and other churches) my husband is now back on his feet and back to his old self. I say "Prayer Power" should return to government offices and IF you don't like it, well, then too bad. Let us return to our roots and say a word of prayer and thanks to our God. Amen

Not just allowed, but encouraged. I think God is the only one who can pull this country out of the mess it's in!

Prayers should be allowed - for us. Anytime government groups get together we are the ones that need the help prayers may deliver.

Global warming is a religous personal belief, being gay is your own personal belief, why don't you keep this crap to yourself and stop forcing your opinion on the rest of us and out of the public forum.Constitution does'nt say seperation of church and state, thats another progressive supreme court ruling like Abortion, Obama care.Just because the Supreme court is stacked with Athiest Democrats and ignorant Republicans does'nt make them right. We pray for our friends and family to be safe and prosperous and if we want to pray in public places just ignore us, it's easy and you Ted can rub your lucky rabbits foot and we will ignore you. Now if the prayer at the beginning of a meeting leads to some sort of law at that meeting then Ted I'm with you.No time in history has a religous enforced goverment ever had a positive impact on society but in the same breath no time in history has a government run society had a positive effect on people either.
